Why Address Validation Matters
Incorrect addresses are one of the top causes of delivery failures in courier and logistics operations. Invalid postal codes, misspelled city names, and missing address components lead to returned packages, delayed shipments, and extra costs.
Common Address Format Issues
- Postal code format: Each country has a specific format (e.g., US: 5 digits, UK: alphanumeric, India: 6 digits)
- Missing required fields: Some countries require state/province; others don't
- Address order: Address component order varies by country (US: smallest to largest; Japan: largest to smallest)
- Character restrictions: Some postal systems don't accept special characters
International Address Standards
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) defines S42 standards for international address formats. Key rules:
- Use uppercase for postal code and country name
- Write the country name in the destination country's language OR English
- Include the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code for automated sorting
