How to Use This Calculator

Enter your package dimensions (length, width, height), actual weight, and select the shipping mode. The calculator will show you the volumetric weight and tell you which weight your carrier will use for billing.

What is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight, also known as dimensional weight, is a pricing method used by couriers and freight carriers worldwide. It accounts for the space a package occupies relative to its actual weight. A large but lightweight box takes up more cargo space than a small heavy one, so carriers charge based on whichever is greater — the actual weight or the volumetric weight.

Volumetric Weight Formula

Volumetric Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ Volumetric Factor

The volumetric factor depends on the shipping mode:

  • Air Freight: 5000 (cm/kg) — standard IATA factor
  • Sea Freight: 1000 (cm/kg) — common for container shipping
  • Road / Express: 3000 to 5000 (cm/kg) — varies by carrier

Billable Weight Explained

The billable weight is the greater of the actual weight and the volumetric weight. For example, if your package weighs 2 kg but has a volumetric weight of 5 kg, the carrier will charge you for 5 kg. Our calculator instantly compares both and highlights the billable weight.

Example Calculation

A box measures 60 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm and weighs 8 kg. Using air freight (factor 5000):

Volumetric Weight = (60 × 40 × 30) / 5000 = 72,000 / 5000 = 14.4 kg

Since 14.4 kg > 8 kg, the billable weight is 14.4 kg.
